The Deceived (Forbidden Doors #02)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Tyndale House Pub (November, 1994)
Author: Bill Myers
Average review score:

Goodbye, R.L. Stine!
My daughter, like many girls her age, has an interest in R.L. Stine books. She desires to know more about the spiritual realm, and she wants to face her fears. Healthy desires, yes. Open to deception, absolutely.

Bill Myers "Forbidden Doors" books have been just what the Physician ordered. I've enjoyed Myers' adult novels, but I think his books for the younger set are even more entertaining. And, above all, they shed light on the biblical definitions of good and evil.

"The Deceived" is the second book we've read together. We liked the first book, but this one was even more riveting. This time, Myers lets one of his main characters, Rebecca, face the deception that's all around. She begins to succumb to the "logic" of reincarnation and hypnotism, mesmerized by the beguiling Maxwell Hunter. Her struggle is believable. Scary stuff. And, with the end of each chapter, my daughter was begging for more. In fact, she let her library book of R.L. Stine's sit abandoned on the table as we cruised through the pages of "The Deceived" to discover Rebecca's final outcome.

We've already obtained a copy of the third book, "The Spell." We can't wait to get started! Hello, Bill Myers. Goodbye, R.L. Stine!

A book for any age
This book is great. I'm a teen and I still love this book.
Reincarnation is definetly not my specialty( I never understood it before) but Bill Myers explained it and showed us how dangerous it is.

This book is awesome!
Hi! I really recommend this book to all teenagers who are into Jesus and like to be kept on the edge of their seat. The whole forbidden Door series is great. I rate this a top notch book. It teaches the importance of not letting even a little bit of sin in your life. If you give it an inch, it takes about a hundred miles. So give you whole self to God, not just part. Myers really emphazises the importance of faith and prayer. Please read this book!

Made me think...
I enjoyed reading about Elizabeth and her life with Roy Freeman. I live in Richmod Kentucky close to the areas described in this book. I enjoyed reading about familiar places. This book made me think about life and all that I hold dear family, children, education etc. I recommend this book to everyone. Don't miss it!

Dear Debbie:
I, Aunt Nanciana, am reading DETOUR for the third time.

It's beautifully written. Each time I read DETOUR I learn something new about life, love, and religion.

Nothing negative; all true and beautiful for all readers to consume and try to live by.

I, Nanciana Wallick Bonebrake, am ever so proud of my dear neice, Debra Wallick Stone.

Thanks for this opportunity to let my family and friends know about her book: DETOUR.

Tastefully written....I enjoyed every minute of the book
DETOUR is one in a line of many books I have read in the last year, and I enjoyed each and every minute of it. It gets to what I believe to be at the heart of every human being,...the desire to get back to the basics of life.

It tells of the lives of two people deeply in love with each other, each on two totally opposite fields of life when reunited. When "The Operation" decides the detours they must each take from their familiar lifestyles leads them to an Amish community, both find out that the things that matter most in life are the things that money cannot buy.

Very educating on the Amish lifestyle. Very respectfully written, informational, and enlightening.

I loved it !!!!!!!!!!

Don't Waste Your Life
Published in Paperback by Crossway Books (May, 2003)
Author: John Piper
Average review score:

Worth a little time
Those familiar with Piper have come to expect Scripture saturated pleadings to readers to find their ultimate fulfillment and joy in "all that God is for us in Christ." For those unfamiliar with Piper, he is a passionate writer and pastor who spurs his readers to greater depths of devotion to God and sacrificial living. He is typically motivating and convicting.

In this book, short by Piper's standards, he drives home the biblical principle that we must give up our lives to find them. Piper applies this passion for Christ in different areas of life: work, relationships, missions, etc. The chapters on risk-taking and work are alone worth the price of the book. I highly reccommend this book as a gift for graduates and college students, but it is worth reading for every believer who doesn't want to waste their life.

Only what's done for Christ will last
I find this book a modern day call equal to William Law's,A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life. Dr. Piper's passion for the essence and main point of life are evident in this work of challenge. I was actually sad when I finished the book because I didn't want the book to end. When I read Dr. Piper's words, scripture is clearer and I am refueled and ready to offer Christ my whole life. It is ALL by grace but here is a man who is not afraid to give us guidelines to what a Christian might look like. His challenge is for both the "young" and "old." He addresses those who would serve God in their jobs and those that God might call to missionary service. You will also be challenged in your use of money and whatever "shells" you might be prone to collect. I know God will be honored by this book. Do you want to hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant"? Please, read this book.

Lay aside every encumbrance...
I can't believe I'm the first person to review this book, so I'll get that little bit of excitement off my chest.

The heartbeat of this book, and this man, is not to waste your life. You have one life to enjoy God and invite others to be glad in Him. Lay aside every encumbrance that you might win the prize, the upward call of Jesus Christ.

Specifically, this book aims to convince you that there is ONE thing in life worth pursuing, ONE thing in life worth giving everything for, ONE thing in life worth radically pursuing, and that is, the glory of God. Piper has, in other books, argued for this very thing. But I get the sense in this book that he is desperately pleading with this generation to throw away mediocrity and to be devoted wholly and completely to the Treasure of the universe, and that anything short of a total sell-out to Him will result in our saying in the end, "I've wasted my life!" He is urgent. This is a dangerous book that, if read carefully, will cause you to rethink and reshape not only what you're basing your life upon, but challening you to build what will last on it.

Written with a popular audience in mind, Piper sums up many of his other great books in a clear, passionate cry to be most satisfied in God, whether you're a missionary or a mail man. How can you, whoever you are and whatever you do, gladly make others glad in God? This book seeks to answer that question and urges you to take whatever steps necessary to secure your happiness in Him. I highly recommend it.

The Dream Quilt
Published in Hardcover by Waterbrook Press (August, 1999)
Authors: Celeste Ryan and Mary Haverfield
Average review score:

The Dream Quilt is a sweet journey.
The Dream Quilt is a beautifully illustrated story that will delight adults and children of all ages. The morals and character of a family our based down through the beauty and tradition of a family heirloom. A must for teachers, parents, and friends.

Casting out fears by trusting God
So many books today give children false hope through fanciful tales of magic "things". There are some cute stories out there about necklaces that give little girls confidence, or teddy bears that offer security and freedom from fears, even stuffed bunnies who teach lessons of how to love. But I always find myself explaining to my daughters that our true hope and our most lasting lessons, come from the Lord - anytime we are frightened or lonely or disappointed, we can trust that the Lord will comfort us and give us strength.

Celeste Ryan weaves a beautiful mix of sentiment and faith by showing us how we look for something tangible to trust for our comfort (the quilt), but all things of this world will eventually pass away - God is the eternal comforter, healer, confidante, friend.

This book is a favorite in our house. The illustrations are eye-catching and unique, the story is smooth and entertaining, and the message is one that will stick with you. The Dream Quilt may be directed at juveniles, but I guarantee adults will enjoy it, as well

The Dream Quilt
This is a sweet story of how a Mom uses the squares on an old quilt to help ease her child's fears at bed time. The illustations are sure to catch a child's eye; they're so colorful. It's a beautiful story and it's a book that's beautiful to look at.

Dumb Things Smart Christians Believe: Ten Misbeliefs That Keep Us from Experiencing God's Grace
Published in Paperback by Servant Publications (August, 1999)
Author: Gary Kinnaman
Average review score:

Amazing!
I just finished reading this book, nicely done Pastor Gary!!

I count myself very fortunate in that the author of this book is also my Pastor at church, as I am a member of Pastor Gary's church!

I'm ordering this book for some friends and wanted to give my comments to everyone as well!

Be Blessed!

An eye opener
The things that the author cover are mind boggling. Things that may be overlooked by mature Christians are explained in full. Common misbeliefs are combated and corrected. Pastor Kinnamen really goes to the heart of believers in this book. This might not be so bad for people who don't believe in God. It will correct any misunderstandings that may be.

Makes you think about what you're thinking about!
It was just the book that I've been looking for. Honest and insightfull, full of revelation. I love how Mr. Kinnaman talks so candidly about depression and the stigma that goes along with this and other related illnesses right in our christian communities. Mr. Kinnamin just jumps right in there and tells it like it is, I love and respect that. It has been a God send for me and I hope that others find it as wonderful a book as I have.

Dwell In Love
Dwell In Love sits on my desk to access for moment to moment inspiration.
This book is a rich source of inspiration for anyone who is in dispair or finds themselves in need of hope. For those who dwell in love it serves as a mini reality vacation from the routine duties of daily life.Food for the Soul.

Meeting Jesus
I found the words in this book to have the feel and sense of Jesus; very similar to the way Jesus comes across in the classic God Calling which was also a channeled work. I recommend this book to anyone whose spirituality is grounded in Jesus. The messages are universal and, at the same time, specific to life problems and situations.

Dwell in Love
A wonderful book for those who search that should not be missed.

Decision, The
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Multnomah Publishers Inc. (November, 1999)
Author: Gayle Roper
Average review score:

Quietly captivating
A highly romantic book that is extremely touching, frequently funny, and easily re-read. The Decision is an exceptional book for contemporary romances. Although written in the first person, the descriptions are handled so well that the reader doesn't miss the other characters' view points. The heroine, Rose, is honest, sinful, repentant, and maturing. The "mystery" is only a small part of the book. The larger part is an understanding of the Amish, the grace and sovereignty of God, and the challenges of being a paraplegic(Jake). Difficult to put down; easy to re-read!

Non-stop action
The first sentence of this book had me hooked, with each subsequent paragraph filling in more details of the "explosive" opening event, and drawing me further into the story. It was hard to put this book down. It contained action, romance, emotion, real people to whom I could relate, and a clear but non-preachy presentation of how God wants to relate to people. I'd like to see many more books by this author.

a singular honor
I just wanted to let readers know that The Decision was awarded the Holt Medallion as the best short inspirational romance of 1999. I'm honored to receive this award and pleased that the judges found The Decision worthy.

DIVINE REVELATION
Published in Paperback by Fireside (August, 1996)
Author: Susan Shumsky
Average review score:

Lots of positives but.........
I think this book is a gem in many ways but also a little confusing and inconsistent. Dr. Shumsky claims that daily meditation is easy but the fact is, you really do have to memorise quite a few different prayers as you submerge into your spiritual realm. Not only is there a necessary order in which to recite these prayers, but additional subject-specific prayers may be needed. In one part of the book she says that "signalling" is needed before asking if a spirit "comes in the name of God" and in another part of the book she states that an elaborate test is necessary for determining whether an entity is truly God or something else (i.e. astral entity or ego). In this section she calls for identifying God before asking for his signal. All this confusion has disrupted my meditation, which I felt initially was making good headway.

Another criticism I have, is that Dr. Shumsky lists "teachers" in both her book and Website with the caveat that she does not know whether they are sufficiently trained or not.

Does anybody else besides me feel they are stumbling in the dark with this method? ... Thank you.

Publishers Weekly Missed Something
I just read the above review of DIVINE REVELATION by Publishers Weekly, and I must say that whoever wrote this review is very prejudiced and close-minded. The scathing comments about the author are completely inaccurate. Obviously the reviewer did not even bother to read the author's biography in the back of the book.

I read DIVINE REVELATION a few years ago, and I still use this simple, practical way to communicate with God directly. This book completely transformed my life. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to lead a more spiritual life and have direct contact and experiences of God.

One of the most important features of this book are the nine tests that helped me to tell the difference between the true voice of God and other voices in my mind. I have found the author's nine-test program is unparalleled among metaphysical authors.

The affirmations and prayers for spiritual healing are extremely useful for getting back to center whenever I feel "off." I use these every day, and they have been a life saver for me.

I made a guided meditation tape using the instructions in the book, and I found it really helped me get the experience much more deeply.

I rate this as one of the top five spiritual self-help books that I have ever read.

How to Hear and Trust the Still Small Voice Within
Do you remember the most recent time you needed help making an important decision, and wished you could have gotten some really good advice? Perhaps you tried hearing the "little voice" of intuition, but weren't sure whether you were hearing the best advice for you to follow... or perhaps you couldn't hear anything at all.

Not to worry! Susan Shumsky's wonderful book, DIVINE REVELATION, describes how to find deeply meaningful answers to all your questions -- as well as how you can follow nine steps of discernment to ensure that the voice of intuition you hear is a true message from Spirit. She lists eleven safeguards to ensure you receive divine messages, as well as signals for healing and "yes" and "no" responses, and fourteen steps for receiving clear answers. Shumsky also describes how to word your questions for Spirit, so you will gain maximal benefit from the answers you receive.

The basic premise of Shumsky's book is that we can receive information and inspiration simply by asking for it, so she provides mediations and prayers to help get us started. Shumsky recommends that healing prayers be utilized often, since they are essential for clearing out negative habits, thoughts, feelings, and psychic ties to others before we attempt to clearly receive spiritual messages.

Whether you have never before received messages from Spirit or are quite adept at it, DIVINE REVELATION is jam-packed with wonderful ideas to help you receive information more clearly than ever before. There is a tremendous emphasis on self-knowledge in this book, so those who are willing and eager to look more deeply at themselves will likely enjoy it the most.

Dreams of Promise (The Allison Chronicles, 4)
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (February, 1999)
Author: Melody Carlson
Average review score:

Longing for More
... I mostly read light fiction, sometimes they are a little deeper in context, after one of those I love to read easy, happy ending books. After the third Allison Chronicle I thought they may all end in suspence, I wish the fourth would have ended diferently, at least take us through the wedding!! I am amazed and saddened that this is the last of the series, and very dissapointed how "Dreams of Promise" ended. Andrew and Allison should have at least had a good night kiss after the dance!!! ....

My Favorite Books!!
The Allison Chronicles are some of the best books I have ever read! They provide situations that I can learn from and apply to my own life. All 4 books were fabulous, but I am extremely disapointed that there are only 4!

Shocked
The Allison Chronicles are amazing! I can't put them down! WHY DOES MELODY CARLSON HAVE TO END THE SERIES???? That's ridiculous! If you are thinking about reading the series...don't, because you will be disappointed when there isn't a true ending.
